SILENT AUCTION |
| |
As I examine the influences in my life, some of the greatest over the years have been my grandparents and my children. When I see them together it touches me. My children were with my grandparents over Memorial Day weekend as 4 generations communed in their tiny house. It was bittersweet because I am not sure how many more of those opportunities will come as life takes its natural course. Unfortunately, my grandfather is battling lymphoma and congestive heart failure.
If anyone knows anything about “The Greatest Generation” then they know that my grandfather is a proud man.

 |
| A quiet man never prone to complain or bring attention to himself. He would not fuss or bother anyone with the details of his illness, the pain he feels or the fact that he can not take care of grandma. There is a silent determination, perseverance and dignity about his character. |
I am a single mother of 3 year old twins. Their father recently chose to divorce us and move to Europe. I have often said that during this time of transition in my life I am praying for grace, dignity and strength. I look to someone like my grandfather who had to leave school in the 8th grade to care for his mom and 8 siblings. He raised 3 children while staying married to the same woman approaching 70 years. He has had 2 heart surgeries and has black lung due to long hours in the coal mines of Southern Illinois. Now, as he battles Lymphoma, he handles it as he has the other transitions in his life. I hope that I can embody half of his grace, dignity and strength.
He is my inspiration as I join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training to raise money to battle the disease my grandfather and countless others face everyday. You see, every 5 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer and every 10 minutes someone loses their battle. And it is the leading cause of cancer deaths among children under the age of 20. LLS’s Mission is to cure blood cancers, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. My grandfather, along with my honored teammate, John Anderson, 12, who resides in Franklin, TN and was diagnosed with Luekemia in 2006, are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! |
